Adipic acid or Hexanedioic acid is an alpha,omega-dicarboxylic acid that is the 1,4-dicarboxy derivative of butane. It has a role as a food acidity regulator and a human xenobiotic metabolite. It is also called hexanedioic acid. Adipic acid is a white crystalline solid with CAS number 124-04-9. It is used mainly in the production of nylon. It occurs relatively rarely in nature. It has a tart taste and is also used as an additive and gelling agent in gelatins. It is also used in some antacids to make them tart. Adipic acid has also been incorporated into controlled-release formulation matrix tablets to obtain pH-independent release for both weakly basic and weakly acidic drugs. It has a molecular formula C6H10O4 and molecular weight 146.14. It has a FEMA number 2011. Significant amounts of adipic acid are used as a food ingredient as a flavoring agent and gelling aid. It is used as food additive with E number E355. It can be described as a colorless white crystalline solid with sour taste and it is having a melting point of 151C to 154C and boiling point of 337C to 338C. It's flash point is 196 deg C (closed cup). It is slightly soluble in cold water and freely soluble in ethanol. It has a relative density of 1.36.
